Sankofa House for Women Foundation
The Sankofa House for Women, Inc. is a non-profit organization whose mission is "to provide a safe and structured environment where women will have an opportunity to receive support and resources that will assist them in becoming self-sufficient and contributing members of society.” This will be achieved by providing transitional housing, counseling, and other programming for non-violent Part 2 female
offenders in a community setting who are leaving the prison system. All referrals will be through the judicial system and the probation and parole authority. The minimum stay is planned for 3 months with no upper limit set at this time. The continuum of care will include counseling, outpatient drug and alcohol treatment, educational programming, parenting classes, life skills, employment, money management, support groups, and other opportunities for growth and education. The driving force behind this endeavor is a remarkable woman, Lynda Moss-McDougall, the founder and Executive Director. She identified the need, conceived the idea 3 years ago, and has brought it to fruition almost single-handedly. There is a broad network of other agencies and individuals who have partnered with the Sankofa House Project to make it a viable entity. For more information, call 724-981-5701 or email LKM109@adelphia.net.
