ALS is a rare, yet fatal disease that typically presents itself in older adults (40-60 years old) although young adults, like Stephen, have been diagnosed with ALS. Lou Gehrig's disease causes the nerves controlling muscle movement in the limbs, neck and diaphragm to slowly degenerate eventually leading to paralysis in the later stages of the disease.
Currently, there is no known cause or cure for this debilitating disease, and current medical treatments are limited or experimental. Since most of the avenues for treatment of ALS are experimental, the family is assessing the cost of various medical treatments/equipment available, which can range from manageable to staggering. The family will provide Stephen with the best medical care and equipment available to help him combat his ALS. A fund was recently set up in Stephen's names to help defray medical costs he may incur.
